First Holy Communion is one of the Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church. Through this sacrament, children receive the Eucharist for the first time and share more fully in the life of the Church.
In the Diocese of Galloway, children normally receive First Holy Communion when they are in Primary 4. Preparation takes place within the parish and, where applicable, through the local Catholic primary school. This preparation helps children to understand the meaning of the Eucharist and the importance of participating in the Mass.
Parents who wish their child to receive First Holy Communion should contact the parish to register their child for the preparation programme. As part of this preparation, children and their families are encouraged to attend Sunday Mass regularly.
First Holy Communion is usually celebrated during the Easter season, often in April or May.
